The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in federal court, targets the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
