TikTok Grants The Community Control to Decrease AI-Generated Media in Their Feeds

TikTok is introducing a new feature that enables them to cut down on the quantity of AI-made content appearing in their streams. This step comes as the company revealed that it now features more than 1 bn AI-generated clips.

Pilot Phase and Launch

This change is undergoing trials over the following weeks before a global launch. This shift comes amid a rise in content created by AI, spurred by new content generation software.

AI Content on Other Platforms

Studies have shown that approximately one in 10 of the fastest-growing content creators on another major platform primarily display clips produced artificially. A significant portion of this content is considered low-quality AI content, a label for inferior, mass-produced content that is frequently illogical or dreamlike.

Our research shows that many people enjoy content produced via AI tools, including AI artwork to educational videos, and we intend to provide users the option to see more or less of that, depending on their own likes,” commented a spokesperson.

Scale of AI Content

The service disclosed that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its network tagged as AI-generated. In total, in excess of 100 million pieces of content are uploaded to the service every day, making clips made by AI a minor portion of its total content library.

How to Adjust Settings

Viewers will be in a position to limit or boost the level of AI-generated videos they view by accessing the topic control feature in the platform and picking AI-made media. Other topics that currently be adjusted under the setting include current affairs, style, beauty, and dance.

AI Disclosure Rules

TikTok’s guidelines mandate content makers to identify lifelike AI-made content, and it forbids malicious deepfakes of public figures or critical incidents. Any authentic-looking AI-generated clip that is unmarked can be removed under its terms of service.

Additionally, the app will henceforth attach an “AI-made” label to content produced via its proprietary AI systems, or detected by an industry-wide initiative for spotting content made by AI. This measure is aimed to deter users from attempting to evade the tagging system.

Responsible AI Funding

TikTok is furthermore establishing a $2m educational fund for professionals and organizations to produce informative material about using AI responsibly. This program will benefit educational bodies focused on educating computer science.

Moderation Strategy

The video-sharing app has justified its safety measures, during discussion over intentions to lay off a large number of safety staff in Britain. The company is expected to cut hundreds of positions in its content moderation department in London, with worker representatives and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that staff are being displaced by automated systems.

A senior executive stated that people-led review would still have a role, but automated tools can protect employees by filtering out the most harmful content before it has to be seen by people. The company stated a notable drop in explicit and harmful content seen by human moderators over the last 12 months due to reliance on its machine learning processes.

We believe it is crucial to integrate people and machines to maintain a secure environment,” the official commented. “We’ll have staff as involved in the system, but we also think it’s highly necessary to minimize viewing of harmful content as quickly as possible, which is where a lot of the machine support is proving valuable work at speed.”
