The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.
Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes are granted the option to question specific calls made by the official, echoing the system currently in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development comes just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can request.
Case in Point
An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
